What exchange rate does Bordera use?

We show you the mid-market rate — the real rate you'd see on Google — next to the rate we're offering, before you confirm. That way you can see the margin rather than having to work it out.

What is an exchange rate margin?

It's the gap between the mid-market rate and the rate a service gives you. It's how most transfer services make money, and it usually isn't shown as a fee. On $1,000 it's commonly $15 to $40 — often more than the visible fee.

How long is my rate locked?

Six hours from the moment you get your quote. Check with your family, confirm the details, come back later — the rate you were shown is the rate you get.

Transfer fees vary by corridor, payment method, banking partner and processing requirements. You'll always see the full cost — fee plus rate — before you confirm anything.

Is Bordera cheaper than my bank?

Usually, yes — banks typically apply a wide exchange rate margin on top of a wire fee. But compare properly rather than taking our word for it: check how much actually arrives in rupees or pesos, from two or three services, on the same day.

Does the 1% US remittance tax apply to Bordera transfers?

Only if you fund a transfer with cash, a money order, a cashier's check or a similar physical instrument. Transfers funded from a bank account, by ACH, by debit card or by a US-issued credit card are outside the tax.

What is the US remittance tax?

A 1% federal excise tax on remittance transfers made after 31 December 2025, created under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. It applies based on how the sender funds the transfer, not on who is sending or where the money is going.

Are non-citizens taxed differently?

No. The law makes no distinction based on citizenship or immigration status. Earlier drafts of the bill did, which is where most of the confusion comes from, but those versions did not become law.

Does the tax apply if my family collects cash?

No. The tax depends on how the sender pays, not on how the recipient receives the money. Cash pickup at the other end doesn't trigger it.

Yes, you can send to both NRE and NRO accounts. Which account you send to affects Indian tax treatment and repatriability, so it's worth understanding the difference.

Limits depend on verification level and corridor. Currently, fully verified accounts can send up to $10,000 per transfer to most corridors.

Can I cancel a transfer?

Remittance transfers to consumers from the US carry a cancellation window and a defined error-resolution process. You have 30 minutes to cancel a transfer after payment authorization, provided the funds have not already been picked up or deposited.

Contact us with your reference number. There's a defined process for resolving errors with remittance transfers, and you're not asking a favour by using it.

Identity verification is a legal requirement for regulated money transfer services in the US. It protects you and keeps the service from being used for fraud or financial crime. You do it once, not every time you send.
