If you send money from the United States to family abroad, you have probably seen the headlines: there is now a federal tax on remittances. You may have seen a figure of 5%, or 3.5%, or 1%. You may have been told it applies to everyone, or only to non-citizens, or only to certain countries.

1% of the amount sent to the recipient. It applies only to transfers funded with cash, money orders, cashier's checks, traveler's checks, or checks cashed by the provider.

When did the remittance tax start?

It applies to remittance transfers made after 31 December 2025, so from 1 January 2026 onwards.
